I am so glad I have Fall of Night ready and waiting to be read after finishing Bitter Blood. The minute I finished reading I dove up from the sofa to make a start on Fall of Night, I was shocked, excited and needed to know more.
If you have not read this book or any of the previous books in this series then be warned this review may contain spoilers.*
Fall of Night picks up after where we were left off in Bitter Blood with Claire leaving Morganville and Shane following soon after. After literally getting a few chapters in it is unbelievable how much I miss the gang being together. I miss the friendly bickering between Eve and Shane, the guy jokes between Shane and Michael, and how Shane and Claire act when around each other. Just like Claire having to settle into her new surroundings, I also had to try to settle with the new surroundings, trying to like new characters as much as I like Eve, Shane and Michael. I like how living in Morganville has made Claire edgy and nervous and this is portrayed in her actions back in the 'human' world that are picked up on by Liz.
While Eve and Michael have stayed in Morganville it wasn't so easy for Shane to leave Claire, and he soon follows behind her. Shane is trying so hard to give Claire her space, but you can still see his over protective streak as he looks out for her and sort of stalking her house.
Leaving Morganville didn't turn out to be not all that's its cracked up to be, and soon enough Claire and Shane wish they were actually back in Morganville. I don't want to go into too much detail about what happens, people you trust end up betraying you, and unlikely people end up being pretty decent. The is action, romance, tension, surprises, and lots of fights with vampires. The human world may just be as scary as Morganville.
One thing I love is that even though Claire can kick ass with vampires and humans and that she is a strong person, she still struggles to swear.
'I learnt a new word today.'I loved every single page of Fall of Night, but now I am torn. Part of me wishes I had left it a bit and read it later on in the year, another part of me wants to read Daylighters right now, but having to wait until November is going to be torture. This series has gotten better and better with each book, with more tension, action and surprises, and while I am (impatiently) looking forward to Daylighters I am also sad to see this series come to an end.
'Ah, you're so cute. You didn't know that word? You know what it stands for, right?'
She lowered her voice to a whisper. 'Fucking idiot?'
'I love that you have to make that much of an effort to curse.'
