Tell Me About It
The more things change…

Ten years ago, the gods of ancient mythology awoke all around the world.

The more things stay the same…

This morning, seventeen-year-old Kyra Locke was late for school.
But that’s not out of the ordinary in a transformed Washington, D.C., dominated by the embassies of divine pantheons and watched over by the mysterious Society of the Sun that governs mankind’s relations with the gods. What is unusual is Kyra’s encounter with two trickster gods on her way home, one offering a threat, and the other a warning.

Kyra escapes with the aid of young operatives from the Society, who inform her that her scholarly father has disappeared from its headquarters at the Library of Congress and taken a dangerous Egyptian relic with him. The Society needs the item back, and they aren’t interested in Kyra’s protests that she knows nothing about it.
Now Kyra must depend on her wits and the help of everyone from a paranoid ex-boyfriend to scary Sumerian gods to operatives whose allegiance is first and always to the Society. She has no choice if she’s going to clear her father’s name and recover the missing relic before
the impending summer solstice.

What’s at stake? Just the end of the world as Kyra knows it.

My Thoughts
I reviewed Gwenda's book Blackwood a while ago and when I saw The Woken Gods on netgalley I knew I had to read it.  When I began reading I was instantly drawn into the world Gwenda has created.  Imagine living in a world were Gods actually exist and walk among us.  Part of you being on edge worried they will attack you, and part of you amazed at the power they can wield, and if you are in favour with them, how you may be able to experience a small amount of this power.
The protagonist Kyra lives in this world in the house she inhabits with her Father.  Her Mum is an oracle and her Dad works a lot, leaving Kyra alone in the house more often then not.  Luckily she can rely on her friend Bree and the welcoming familiarity of her home.  Soon enough the relative safety of Kyra's life is shattered, and armed with knowledge and the help of Bree, Tam (ex-boyfriend), Oz and Justin (operatives in the Society), they must find Kyra's Dad and save the world and keep Kyra safe.

The synopsis gives a good idea about what The Woken Gods is about, but it's not until I began reading that I really got to see the world Gwenda has created, full of mythology, secrets, mysteries, and some pretty scary monsters.  One thing about The Woken Gods is there constantly something happening to keep you engrossed, following Kyra as she tries to save her Dad, God's wanting to rule the world, and secret plots going on behind the scenes.  I loved the idea behind the relics and how they allow the holder, or wearer, to have some control over the Gods.

The world building of The Woken Gods is full of creativity and imagination and it made it easy to not only fall into the pages, but also to image the scenery and what is going on.  I could not put this book down, and while it took a while to read it I enjoyed every single page.  The ending of The Woken Gods was not something I expected, and I am looking forward to seeing where Gwenda takes this possible series.
