Book Wars!! The Jewel by Amy Ewing

Book Wars a weekly feature hosted between two book review blogs – A Life Bound By Books & Much Loved Books!

It’s a fact that book lovers know all about the covers of the books they covet.  Often when a title is released here in the US, it’s sometimes vastly different across the pond in the US.  So, Lisa from A Life Bound By Books and I have come together to create Book Wars to talk about the difference in covers when it comes to the US vs. UK versions.

We hope from time to time authors will chime in with their thoughts as well. We welcome everyone to comment and share their thoughts too! The more the merrier!

Before we get to this weeks Book Wars, we have a winner to announce. The Book Wars winner for Fireborn by Keri Arthur is.....US  !  Thank you to everyone who voted for both books, and for picking a winner.

Also, there's a poll at the bottom of the post that we'd love to hear your input for the two covers! Tell us which one YOU love the most.

The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty. But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty—because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring.

Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel’s glittering facade: the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence... and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess’s petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.

About the author:
Amy Ewing is the young adult author of The Jewel, the first in a trilogy from HarperTeen, coming out September 2014.

She grew up in a small town outside Boston, where her librarian mother instilled a deep love of reading at a young age. Amy moved to New York City in 2000 to study theater at New York University. Unfortunately, her acting career didn’t quite pan out. She worked in restaurants, as an administrative assistant, a nanny, and a sales representative for a wine distributor before the lack of creativity in her life drove her to begin writing.

Amy received her MFA in Creative Writing for Children from The New School, where she was lucky enough to meet a fabulous community of YA writers who keep her sane on a daily basis. She lives in Harlem, where she spends her days writing, eating cheese, and occasionally binge watching The Vampire Diaries.

Let the Wars Begin:
Its now time to make our decision, let's see what we think about the covers and pick our favourite cover.
This week I picked a book that for me is pretty easy when choosing a favorite of the two. While I can appreciate how different they are from one another, I love the US cover more so than the US one for the mere fact that the US cover seems a bit more put together and elegant. The UK cover feels more like a book about a high school teen going to a school dance. And while I have yet to read these books... I know! *hides* don't kill me!!! I know that a high school dance is far from what this trilogy is about.

And so, I'll be sure to read these books soon - PROMISE! - I am casting my vote for the US cover for this weeks "Wars!" What's your vote? Be sure to cast it below.
Unlike Lisa, I have just finished reading this book and I do like how the UK cover reflects certain aspects of the book. However, for this war I am voting for the USA cover.
I just think that this cover is more appealing and more pretty (please don't judge me for liking a pretty cover) I would pick this one over the UK one any time.
Its a USA win for me.

VOTE for YOUR favourite cover of  NOW!

  1. I usually pick the UK cover for these for some reason, but I just love the art and look of the US cover this time. I love these posts!!

  2. You would think I would pick UK all the time, but I'm pretty sure I've picked mostly USA, I will have to update my page and see.

Thank you for your comment and your vote :)

  3. US but there's not much difference for me. When I first heard we were getting a different cover I was gutted but the UK one has really grown on me. In fact the more I look at it I'm starting to prefer the UK. Hmmmm!

Thank you for taking a few moments to comment.
Comments mean love and make the world go round so don't be shy :)
