Blog Tour: Renegade by Kerry Wilkinson Q&A + Giveaway

Today, as part of the Renegade blog tour, I have Kerry Wilkinson on the blog being interviewed by the narrator of the Reckoning audiobook, Kat Rose-Martin.

The voice of Silver Blackthorn interviews her creator

For various reasons, I probably listen to more books than I get the chance to read. I love audios and am often on Audible looking for things to add to my wishlist.

Reckoning, which came out last year, is told from a first-person point of view, so when I had the chance to audition potential narrators, I was literally listening for the voice of Silver Blackthorn.

It's a very strange experience hearing other people read the words you've written. As a writer, I remember where I was when I wrote certain lines or came up with plot points. A good narrator makes or breaks an audio and when I heard Kat Rose-Martin's (https://twitter.com/katmartin92) audition, I knew she was the right person for the job. She is Silver, so much so that, when I was reading back the final draft of Renegade, there were points when it was Kat who was in my head.

Reckoning is out now on Audible (http://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Young-Adults/Reckoning-Audiobook/B00QQSCUKS), with Renegade following in a few weeks.

As part of its release, Kat has taken the opportunity to ask me a few questions about the series in general:

KRM: The story is led by such strong characters. Are any of the characters based on people you know?
KW: Not as such, although Silver's desire to go off exploring is something I've always felt. She wants to sneak away to the woods, climb trees and generally get into trouble. When I was a little younger than her, I always wondered what was off down this lane, or over that set of fields. I must have been a nightmare for my mum in particular.

I still have those urges. I've been hiking in the Canadian Rockies, the Alaskan outback, the Ouachita Forest in Arkansas and all sorts of other places. I'm always wondering what's over the next ridge and so on.

The biggest bad guy is the Minister Prime, who looks like one of my old teachers. I probably shouldn't say any more than that...

KRM: Which character do you most see yourself in?
KW: It's a tough one as most of the characters probably have a bit of me in them - but probably Opie because he's the quietest. He sits in the background, takes everything and everyone in, and then acts when he needs to. Unless I'm with people I know well, that's pretty much me...although I'd likely be making many more sarcastic comments than he does.

KRM: I took the test at the end of Renegade and would be either a Member or an Inter. What would you be?
KW: I'd be a low-end Inter...a working-class kid bluffing his way into a middle-class world. Pretty much like real life!

KRM: If I had the choice I would like to hang out with Faith and Opie. Who would be your favourite person to spend time with?
KW: Definitely Faith. She's feisty, fearless and recklessly, utterly loyal. She'd make a great friend for anyone. Wouldn't want to get on her wrong side, though...

KRM: Were their any significant plot changes or additional sections that didn't make the final edit that you find really interesting?
KW: Not really - everything ended up on the page and the story I had in my head three years ago is pretty much the final version.

Reckoning had a fair few rewrites but it was mainly tightening and reordering as opposed to complete plot changes. The idea of the coloured Thinkwatch faces wasn't actually mine - it came from Natasha, my editor, and worked really well. I'd already finished writing the trilogy when she suggested that and I wrote it into all three books.

In my initial draft, the Gully was always called 'the lake' or something boring like that. She suggested giving it a proper name, like people do when they have a den or something similar. Making it The Gully works so much better. Natasha did a really great job of honing the story to make it better.

Now, if you want to be in with a chance to win a copy of Renegade, then just fill in the rafflecopter form below. As I am sending this book out myself it is a UK giveaway only, unless you have a UK friend who can pass this along to you.
