Book Review: The Awakening of Sunshine Girl [The Haunting of Sunshine Girl #2] by Paige McKenzie & Alyssa B. Sheinmel
When I saw The Awakening of Sunshine Girl on NetGalley I knew I had to read this, I was eager to find out what happens next for Sunshine in her personal life, as well as her new powers. The Awakening of Sunshine Girl picks up after the events in the previous book, Sunshine is still learning how to be a Luiseach, how to deal with everything that comes with it, as well as going to school and being a 'normal' teenager. Her dad, Aidan, is still trying to persuade Sunshine to train with him, for him to be her mentor, and he goes about it in sneaky ways to ensure she says yes. It was at this point that I made the decision that I did not like him at all.
The Awakening of Sunshine Girl was an interesting read. We get to see what Sunshine is really capable of when she is taken to Llevar la Luz to train. Llevar la Luz is a sanctuary for all Luiseach to live, and train, but it now stands deserted and alone, it is here where Aidan lives with Nola, a fellow Luiseach. We also learn about the history of Luiseach a bit more, and learn why Sunshine was abandoned as a baby.
Underneath the main plot of Sunshine learning about her inheritance, there is also someone after Sunshine, wanting to kill her. We get glimpses into thier side of the story and what they are doing to get closer to Sunshine. For me it was quite obvious who this person was so I wasn't too surprised when it was revealed but I did like how it was done.
I really enjoyed the previous book in this series, but for me The Awakening of Sunshine Girl just didn't have the spark of the previous one. I wanted to see more ghosts and hauntings mixed in with Sunshine learning about her powers, and although we do get to see an aspect of that, it just wasn't enough for me. However I loved getting to see what she was capable of and how powerful she is, the ending was one of the best and worst endings of all time. I loved how it all fell into place and ended, I just don't like the cliffhanger we have been left on.
Although there wasn't as much hauntings as I'd hoped for, there was enough of the paranormal aspect to keep me entertained. I just need to find out what happens next.
