Book Review: The Turn [The Hollows #0.1] by Kim Harrison
I have most of the Hollows series waiting to be read, and I never seem to find time to read them. When I saw The Turn on NetGalley I had to request it, what a better way to start this series with the very first book, seeing how it all began and who was to blame.
Trisk and Kal have finished school and are waiting for job offers, Kal is offered a lot but his most promising is lost by his own recklessness, Trisk has very few offers and all not the best for a woman at that time, but the offer to go to Global Genetics, to work as a genetic engineer, but doing some security work for the enclave, ensuring that any new discoveries are shared with them, and be there to tweak a few things if needed, is the offer of a lifetime for her, and she grabs it with both hands.
We are then brought back to present day, where Trisk is tweaking the Angel Tomato's code, to ensure its safe for all Inderworlders, but her skills are highly doubted and Kal is hired to ensure it does what it's meant to, even if that means finding faults with Trisk's work, or making faults himself.
The Turn was a book that had me intrigued from the moment I began reading, I love how unique this world is, but also how 'human' it is, no matter what your breed the rules of the day have to be followed, making it harder for females, especially Trisk, to get anywhere in her career. Seeing how she is judged and watched to make sure she is doing her job, how she constantly has to prove herself made me fell sad for her, but seeing how determined she is to keep going and prove she fully deserves the job was very inspiring.
I really enjoyed the twists and turns in the pages of The Turn, especially towards the end when everything has gone to pot, seeing a huge turn of events and something which I did not expect, but was asked for. Although these characters are new to me, as is the world, I really enjoyed myself, even knowing how it would all end. I like the uniqueness of the story, and how one tomato can cause havoc.
After finishing The Turn I am excited to dive into The Hollows series and see what happens next, it looks like delayed reading fitting in perfectly for me this time around.
